3 cloud resolutions for 2016

Along with losing those extra pounds, think about leveraging clouds in better and more productive ways

It’s that time of year when gyms fill up with New Year’s resolution-driven people who want to get into shape. At least, that’s the idea for the first few weeks of the calendar. Perhaps it’s time to work up your IT resolutions as well, especially when it comes to supporting your cloud-based systems in new and more innovative ways.

Resolution No. 1: Set up monitoring/management that proactively looks for performance and stability issues.

Most of us who leverage public cloud(s) use the provider’s native monitoring and management capabilities. However, a more comprehensive approach and technology is typically needed to effectively keep tabs on public and private clouds in production, as well as monitor traditional systems. The idea is to use deeper analysis of the operational data coming off the clouds to proactively spot potential issues before they hinder or stop production. This is money well invested.

Resolution No. 2: Govern all services or APIs.

APIs drive the clouds — typically, RESTful Web services. Moreover, as you build or cloud-enable applications, more APIs are exposed. You need to place service governance around these APIs to control who can access them and what they can do with them. APIs are very powerful, but in the wrong hands they can cause operational damage. You need a sound cloud service governance plan, approach, and technology in place.

Resolution No. 3: Train my people.

Simply because clouds move into the enterprise doesn’t mean the enterprise is ready for clouds. Lack of training causes most of the issues happening right now with clouds. Those who operate the cloud-based system often don’t know how to do so effectively; thus, they end up learning via trial and error. A bit of training goes a long way.

Are these resolutions doable? Absolutely. They require some investment, but the value will come back tenfold.


2016: The year we see the real cloud leaders emerge

Amazon, Google, and Microsoft know what it means to run hyperscale public clouds, while IBM is learning. Which will capture the enterprise as it lurches skyward?

You can probably rattle off the top enterprise software vendors without thinking: Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, and SAP. According to the best estimates I can find, those four companies together racked up close to $140 billion in software revenue in 2015, led of course by Microsoft and its well-known offerings.

Our cloud future will feature a different foursome — Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and IBM — and although public cloud revenues remain a small fraction of those driven by software, growth is by leaps and bounds across the board. AWS, whose long lead seems to grow and grow, pulled in more than $7 billion in 2015, a year-over-year expansion rate of around 80 percent.

Microsoft’s cloud business appears to be jumping as well, with an analyst at the firm FBR Capital Markets predicting that Redmond will break $8 billion in cloud revenue for 2016, up from an estimated $5 billion this year. That number includes Office 365, however (which may be cloud connected and cloud delivered, but you can’t really call it SaaS).

Based on purported revenue alone, IBM is next in line, since its last quarterly earnings report claimed $4.5 billion in annual public cloud revenue, a 45 percent jump year over year. But like Microsoft — which was recently chastised for fudging its cloud numbers by none other than ex-CEO Steve Ballmer — IBM has a history of inflating cloud revenue for the enjoyment of analysts.

Google doesn’t even break out its cloud revenue, but one source, The Information, estimates it to be a mere $400 million for all of 2015. Sounds about right, because until recently, it’s been hard to determine whether Google had an enterprise cloud strategy at all.

Then, two months ago, Google Technical Fellow Urs Hölzle predicted that Google’s cloud business could outpace its advertising business in five years. To put that in context, Google made around $65 billion in advertising in 2015.

How is Hölzle’s conjecture even remotely possible? Because in the public cloud business, infrastructure is everything. Check this recent post by InfoWorld contributor David Mytton: “Global location wars: Amazon vs. Microsoft vs. Google.” Google is No. 3 in its global coverage, but the point is the company already boasts an enormous cloud data center footprint thanks to its search/advertising business.

Note that David’s map charts public cloud availability regions, not capacity, but there’s a reason why he left out IBM: Most of IBM’s global presence has come from a buildout of SoftLayer, which lacks the platform services offered by the other three players. The IBM Bluemix PaaS has a rich bundle of services, but as far as we could determine, Bluemix as a public cloud offering is currently available only in the U.S. South, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Given IBM’s traditional approach to business, this makes a certain degree of sense. IBM professional services can build out whatever its customers want on its SoftLayer infrastructure, with Bluemix availability gradually ramping up over time. Meanwhile, many Bluemix deployments will be on-premises, as IBM plays a hybrid long game. The other three players have more explicitly dedicated themselves to delivering public cloud self-service.

Amazon established that model, which accounts for its huge lead — although enterprise customers remain a small slice of its clientele. Microsoft has the unique advantage of a huge presence in the enterprise data center with Windows Server and System Center, which (with the help of Azure Pack and Azure Stack) it’s already using to foster a hybrid architecture for customers, with the goal of making Azure cloud a natural extension of on-premises customer infrastructure. That smooth on-ramp is part of the reason behind the bullish predictions that Azure may soon overtake AWS in the enterprise cloud competition.

Google has the most room to grow. It has a head start in the race to support production container deployments at scale, thanks to pioneering work on the Linux container spec and experience spinning up billions of containers per week — along with the recent launch of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which may well develop an effective hybrid play. In a December 2015 review, InfoWorld’s Peter Wayner found the Cloud Platform as it stands to be a flexible, elegant offering.

Will Google stay committed and figure out how to accommodate enterprise customers? Will Amazon offer enterprises an easier way to go hybrid with AWS? Can Microsoft sync the ongoing development of the Azure public cloud and the Azure Stack effectively? At the least, we’ll see a glimmering of answers to these and other questions in 2016.

Your resume is the story of your life at work, but it shouldn’t be a blow-by-blow description of your entire history — save that for your autobiography. Making sure the most relevant details and experience aren’t drowned out by extraneous details is key to grabbing and holding a recruiter or hiring manager’s attention.

“Don’t give [hiring managers and recruiters] a reason — any reason — not to hire you. They will automatically make assumptions about you based on your name, your age, your sex, and there’s not much you can do about that. But don’t make it that much harder on yourself by including stuff they really don’t care about,” says Rick Gillis, career consultant, job search expert, and author of Promote! Here, some of CIO.com’s resume experts offer additional advice on what not to include.

Your picture

Sure, employers are legally obligated to avoid discrimination in hiring — that means they can’t refuse to hire you based on your age, sex, race, gender identity, marital or disability status, among others. But unconscious bias is real, and even the most well-intentioned hiring managers can fall victim to it. Don’t include a picture with your résumé and risk triggering an unconscious bias from a hiring manager. If they want to know what you look like after reading about your killer technical skills and winning personality, they’ll check social media.

Your age

As we’ve stated before, avoid giving hiring managers and recruiters any reason to reject your resume, and that includes your age, or any factors that could point to your age. While you want to include your educational history, degrees, and any particularly relevant courses, projects, or certifications, it’s best to avoid putting graduation dates alongside these.

Age, of course, shouldn’t act as a deterrent in a job search, though in many cases ageism, especially in the startup culture that is IT, happens. Make sure you’re focusing on what your years of experience can bring to the table, and make sure you’re up-to-date on the latest and greatest technology, trends, and skills, says Gillis.

“It’s about being able to demonstrate your accomplishments. Most IT firms want to know one of two things: Can you make them money or can you save them money? Then they’ll want to hire you, regardless of your age,” Gillis says.

An ‘Objective’

There are two major problems with objective statements on a resume: The first is that they’re inane, and the second is that they take up some of the most valuable real estate while saying nothing of value. Say you’re trying to hire a skilled, talented, and seasoned software developer. If you read a candidate’s resume and it says, “Rockstar software engineer looking for a rewarding, fulfilling growth opportunity,” your first thought isn’t, “This is the one!”

Instead of a vapid objective statement, use this valuable space to articulate your brand and customize the statement to the job you’re applying for, says Michelle Jospeh, CEO of PeopleFoundry, in her blog. “By speaking only in generalities, you’re not adding any substance to the resume,” Joseph writes. She adds that many of today’s job seekers just eliminate the objective statement altogether. But if the resume feels naked without it, a sentence or two explaining why you’ll be perfect for the position you’re applying for will suffice.

This is another waste of space, and it’s best left out of any modern resume. Besides, many hiring managers and recruiters will search your profile on LinkedIn and read your social media endorsements and recommendations for themselves. “If they want references, they will request them; there is no need for you to waste space saying, ‘References available upon request,’ either,” Joseph says.

Work experience more than 10 years old

Your resume should include only the last 10 years of work history, the experts agree. Experience from more than a decade ago is no longer pertinent information for an application, as much will have changed since that time, Joseph writes. Unless a job was deliberately short-term — like an internship, a contract position, or a job in event planning, then it should be left off the page as well, she adds. And every job listed should have some relevance to the posting you’re applying for, the experts agree. “If you worked at a grocery store for three months 22 years ago, you don’t need to include that information

Obsolete technology

Finally, while you want to include your technical skills, platforms, systems, solutions, and languages, make sure you’re not including technology that’s far out of date, no longer in widespread use, or that’s straight-up obsolete — unless it’s a specific requirement for the job. If the position requires mainframe skills and you have those, by all means include that. But if not, remove skills that aren’t currently relevant.

“A great example is Windows 10. Now, that release is pretty recent, so no one’s going to be an expert quite yet. But if you’re using it now, put that on your resume and remove all previous versions — hiring managers and recruiters understand that you probably know Windows XP, 7, 8, and the like. Leaving those on there makes you look dated and out-of-touch,” says Stephen Zafarino, technical recruiting manager at recruiting, staffing

Over 1500 of you voted (thank you) selecting from over 120 different companies.  We have taken the top vote getters in each category to come up with a list of the final 32 finalists for the DevOps Dozen.

Frankly 32 finalists was more than we were planning on. But so many companies were so closely grouped in the nomination voting that we didn’t feel comfortable selecting one company for the finals and leaving another out.

So now we are opening the final phase of voting to you our readers. Voting will be open for the entire month of September. But you can only vote once.  On our DevOps Dozen site most of the finalists have sent us information that they would like you to know before casting your vote. Please take the time to read some of this, especially for companies you may not be familiar with.

The finalists range from open source projects, to cloud service providers, DevOps tools vendors to service providers.  When voting you are allowed to select 12 of the 32 as DevOps Dozen winners.  So take the time and make your selections carefully.

The Art of DevOps

This is the third in a series of posts on DevOps. The first written by my colleague Lee Reid was titled The Simple Math of DevOps. The second The Calculus of DevOps was written by IBM client, and my friend Carmen DeArdo of Nationwide. Lee introduced mathematically improving delivery throughput by leveraging DevOps to improve Trust. And Carmen used Calculus to imply that the business value of IT can be improved by adopting DevOps to increase the frequency of releases. In my post I would like to visit the art of DevOps , or the art of adopting DevOps by picking up right where Carmen left off – by looking at the culture side of adopting DevOps.

Lee and Carmen have already alluded to some basic premises behind DevOps as an approach – reducing batch sizeand improving collaboration. These result in reducing complexity, increasing throughput, and improving trust. Let’s talk about how to get there.

As I have worked with customers adopting DevOps, across company sizes, across industries and countries, there are four common threads that make DevOps adoption successful, leveraging all three aspects of DevOps adoption – culture, process and automation. These are:

  1. Reduce batch size: The most effective way to manage risk and quality, while increasing speed is to reduce the batch size in each iteration or ‘sprint’. This is a mind shift to release smaller, more frequent new versions. Where it is not possible to release new versions that frequently to customers, release small batches to a pre-production area. The deliverable in pre-production is tested and made customer-ready, and then released to the customer at formal release dates. As Lee and Carmen have both discussed, reducing batch size is a pre-requisite to improving both trust and business value.
  2. Shift-left Operational engagement: Get operations engaged right from the beginning of a project/initiative. This has been a core principle of DevOps. Do not leave Ops in a silo that one throws code over the wall to, but have them engaged in the development process, right from requirement inception stage. This allows Ops to have visibility into what is coming from Dev; allowing them to deliver the right production-like environments, as and when needed to Dev and Test teams. It also allows Ops to shift operational concerns left, left into the minds of developers, making them more Ops conscious and engaged in what happens after they hand-off to Ops.
  3. Continuous funding: This is a significant change in an organizations funding model to enable continuous availability and engagement of SMEs and business functions, previously not engaged on a continuous basis – like security, legal, marketing, etc. Carmen in his post mentioned several examples of ‘waiting for…’ work, someone else to do something and environments. Another ‘waiting for’ in enterprises is for funding. Funding is typically provided in a waterfall manner, with specific hard dates (Months, quarters, fiscal year) and gates, not suitable for a Continuous Delivery model. Funding too should be continuous.
  4. Create a ‘Product Management’ team: This team includes a Designer, Development lead, operations lead and an Architect at the minimum (4-in-box). They own the ‘product’ through its entire lifecycle, and beyond transient projects. They are responsible for long-term thinking, design thinking, evolutionary architectural thinking, and overall ownership of the product, from concept to end-of-life.
  5. Setting up a DevOps Center of Excellence (CoE): This center of excellence is not an administrative organization or a ‘tools/enablement group’, but a place where DevOps adoptees come to learn from each other and share expertise and lessons learnt. As organizations adopt and scale DevOps adoption, this CoE also becomes a source of DevOps coaches, helping teams and programs adopt DevOps, and own the organizations DevOps framework – their own flavor of DevOps.

Adopting DevOps is an art. It is not as simple as hiring a consultant who can show how to improve processes; it is not just buying and adopting tools to automate manual tasks; and it is not going through ‘fall-back-into-the-arms-of-the-person-behind-you’ exercises to build trust. It is a combination of all three – process improvement, organizational and cultural change, and automation with tools to replace manual processes. Adopting these in any enterprise, outside of startups, requires overcoming organizational inertia. By changing culture not by edict, but by showing the need and value of change. By building trust, not through meetings, but with improved communication and transparency. By improving business value, not by measuring mandated KPIs, but by improving organizational agility and throughput. Overcoming organizational inertia, by delivering towards a common goal for the business, irrespective of where in the organization one is, and what role one has. By developing a culture where everyone takes responsibility of delivering value to the business.


Introduction To Pig And Hive

INTRODUCTION TO PIG

In Map Reduce framework, programs need to be translated into a series of Map and Reduce stages. However, this is not a programming model which data analysts are familiar with. So, in order to bridge this gap, an abstraction called Pig was built on top of Hadoop.

Pig is a high level programming language useful for analyzing large data sets. Pig was a result of development effort at Yahoo!

Pig enables people to focus more on analyzing bulk data sets and to spend less time in writing Map-Reduce programs.

Similar to Pigs, who eat anything, the Pig programming language is designed to work upon any kind of data. That’s why the name, Pig!

Pig consists of two components:

  1. Pig Latin, which is a language
  2. Runtime environment, for running PigLatin programs.

A Pig Latin program consist of a series of operations or transformations which are applied to the input data to produce output. These operations describe a data flow which is translated into an executable representation, by Pig execution environment. Underneath, results of these transformations are series of MapReduce jobs which a programmer is unaware of. So, in a way, Pig allows programmer to focus on data rather than the nature of execution.

PigLatin is a relatively stiffened language which uses familiar keywords from data processing e.g., Join, Group and Filter.

Execution modes:

Pig has two execution modes:

  1. Local mode : In this mode, Pig runs in a single JVM and makes use of local file system. This mode is suitable only for analysis of small data sets using Pig
  2. Map Reduce mode: In this mode, queries written in Pig Latin are translated into MapReduce jobs and are run on a Hadoop cluster (cluster may be pseudo or fully distributed). MapReduce mode with fully distributed cluster is useful of running Pig on large data sets.

INTRODUCTION TO HIVE

The size of data sets being collected and analyzed in the industry for business intelligence is growing and in a way, it is making traditional data warehousing solutions more expensive. Hadoop with MapReduce framework, is being used as an alternative solution for analyzing data sets with huge size. Though, Hadoop has proved useful for working on huge data sets, its MapReduce framework is very low level and it requires programmers to write custom programs which are hard to maintain and reuse. Hive comes here for rescue of programmers.

Hive evolved as a data warehousing solution built on top of Hadoop Map-Reduce framework.

Hive provides SQL-like declarative language, called HiveQL, which is used for expressing queries. Using Hive-QL users associated with SQL are able to perform data analysis very easily.

Hive engine compiles these queries into Map-Reduce jobs to be executed on Hadoop. In addition, custom Map-Reduce scripts can also be plugged into queries. Hive operates on data stored in tables which consists of primitive data types and collection data types like arrays and maps.

Hive comes with a command-line shell interface which can be used to create tables and execute queries.

Hive query language is similar to SQL wherein it supports subqueries. With Hive query language, it is possible to take a MapReduce joins across Hive tables. It has a support for simple SQL like functions– CONCAT, SUBSTR, ROUND etc., and aggregation functions– SUM, COUNT, MAX etc. It also supports GROUP BY and SORT BY clauses. It is also possible to write user defined functions in Hive query language.

Comparing MapReduce, Pig and Hive

 
Sqoop Flume HDFS
Sqoop is used for importing data from structured data sources such as RDBMS. Flume is used for moving bulk streaming data into HDFS. HDFS is a distributed file system used by Hadoop ecosystem to store data.
Sqoop has a connector based architecture. Connectors know how to connect to the respective data source and fetch the data. Flume has an agent based architecture. Here, code is written (which is called as ‘agent’) which takes care of fetching data. HDFS has a distributed architecture where data is distributed across multiple data nodes.
HDFS is a destination for data import using Sqoop. Data flows to HDFS through zero or more channels. HDFS is an ultimate destination for data storage.
Sqoop data load is not event driven. Flume data load can be driven by event. HDFS just stores data provided to it by whatsoever means.
In order to import data from structured data sources, one has to use Sqoop only, because its connectors know how to interact with structured data sources and fetch data from them.

In order to load streaming data such as tweets generated on Twitter or log files of a web server, Flume should be used. Flume agents are built for fetching streaming data.

HDFS has its own built-in shell commands to store data into it. HDFS cannot be used to import structured or streaming data
